We Made Magic

It was a Sunday afternoon.
Between travel and between sheets we became alchemists.
A perfect potion of energy, protein, cells, and love.
It was our first time … So I couldn’t be sure.
But I was pretty sure.

We made magic.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

As of today I’m 13 weeks pregnant. I found out the day before we left for Sayulita, Mexico. I’m already so in love with this little bebe and am so proud every time I get to hear it’s little heart beat.

I couldn’t wait to tell you guys – have you noticed the hints I’ve been dropping? I’ll be sharing more and answering any questions (ie. When are you due? Was it planned? Will the baby have dreadlocks? Are you going to birth it in a field or in a tub? How are you feeling? What are you eating? What about Braid?) later this week.

  1. Congratulations! You and Jeremy are going to be great parents!

  2. thenik

KATHLEEN! (and JEREMY!) I’ve had a feeling. Well, I had a feeling after you commented on my babe’s birthday post a few months back. So, I was premature in that. Ha. I’m OVER THE MOON for y’all. Welcome to rad experience!

    • Ha! I think I was in denial about how baby crazy I ACTUALLY was.

      • thenik

I was the same way before we made the plunge. And then it was unleashed.

  3. WHAT?! Congratulations to you both! What a grand new adventure 🙂

  4. Lisa

CONGRATULATIONS! I was beginning to suspect & had a gut feeling it was only a matter of time… 😉

  5. julie

Congrats! So Happy for you both!

  6. I totally thought that was a hint in yesterday’s post. Congratulations!!

Lol @ will the baby have dreadlocks 🙂

    • Moving out of the home office was definitely prompted by the pregnancy. I’ll share more on that over at the Braid blog tomorrow!

  7. Jensen

OH MAN SO EXCITING! Can’t wait to hear more!

  8. Lexi

My first reaction is YAYAYAYAYAY! Congratulations, you guys will be amazing parents!

  9. Yes. Yes. Yes.

I wish I still lived around the corner so Molly could have a lil dreadlocked baby friend! : )

    Love you guys!

  10. Congratulationsssss! Amazing. But, I’ll be honest: the first thing I thought was “Found out BEFORE you went to Mexico?! Damnit, I’d have waited to get back so I could slam margaritas without feeling bad.” Thank god I can’t get pregnant, I’m a monster.

    • I KNOW. I was pregnant in Tulum and definitely did not know.

It was actually kind of a bummer to be first trimester sick (no drinks and sleeping 16 hours a day) for the bulk of my summer vacations but I guess what they say about there being no right time is true! BUT – as of today the midwife approved a glass of wine here and there. XOXO

  11. Aw! Congrats to the both of you!
I’m excited to read about your adventures in babyhood. 🙂

  12. Congrats, friend. Can’t wait to share this experience with you!

  13. Congratulations Kathleen and Jeremy! Can’t wait to follow all of the adventures with your family!

  14. rox

yay yay yayyy! congrats! looking forward to reading all about your baby journey!

  15. Jen

Kathleen!!!!! I am so so very excited for you and Jeremy. Congratulations. You will be the most amazing baby mama. It transforms you, this motherhood thing, I can’t wait to see this little one and read along as you explore and find your way to the other side. Much love. xoxo.

    • I already feel transformed. It’s pretty amazing. XO

  16. Vivi

Congratulations! Very exciting news! I know it seems strange to hear from a perfect stranger but I think you two will make wonderful parents.

    • None of you feel like strangers to me! Thanks for the love. XOXO

  17. Ravyn

Congratulations … what a wonderful gift. I am about a week ahead of you, and it’s been the adventure of our lives so far. Looking forward to your baby posts! Also, hooray for the 2nd trimester … It’s like a DREAM!

    • Congrats to you! The first trimester couldn’t have felt longer. So glad to have turned that corner. XO

  18. YES! I think I noticed every.single.hint (but maybe I’m hyper-aware because I’ve been thinking a lot about babies myself!

I am so excited and happy for you! I completely understand if you’re not going to share, but I would be thrilled to (possibly) hear your take on all things baby and parenting.

This is one lucky little person to have you two as parents!

    • I think I should do a post just to point out all the hints!

My purpose in life is to capture, shape, and share my story – baby and parenting included! There’s obviously no “right way” to raise a kiddo but it’s an adventure I want to document. XOXO

      • Angela

Seriously lucky! I wish you were my mom. You’re the super cool, hippy mom every kid on the block will wish was theirs!

  19. Jeran

So exciting! You are going to be a great parent and take you kiddo on lots of great adventures. Having kids is probably the greatest adventure of my life. Enjoy a nap once in awhile and READ as much as you can now, because I never seem to have time for that now.

    • Thank you, Jeran! You have definitely been an inspiration when it comes to dreaming about taking this little baby on an adventure or two.

I’ve been loading up on reading material and naps while I can!

  20. Congratulations from another stranger who reads your blog. Such an exciting time for you both!

  21. Hannah

I cannot even begin to say congratulations enough. I am so happy for you both! That little bebe could not be more blessed. I am so excited to follow along through this new journey of yours 🙂

  29. Jacki

But … WILL the baby have dreadlocks? (Kidding! ;)) Yay, congratulations on this amazing news – so happy for you guys!

  30. Congratulations! I know you’ve been talking about making the leap into parenthood for a while now, so I’m glad to see it’s happening for you guys!

  31. Nicole

Genuinely can’t wait to her about your bravest journey yet as it unfolds. Looking forward to hearing about how you blend your existing life in to this whole new world that lies in wait. Exciting times.

    Congrats both!
    Nicole x

    • I’m a bit anxious to see how I blend the bebe into our lives too. But … he or she has already been to Mexico (twice!). I think it’ll be able to hang. 😉

  32. Carly

KATHLEEEEEEEN!! This made me cry…at work. Oh geez!! I could NOT be happier for you both, and I equally cannot wait to see your ‘Anatomy of an Outfit’ posts featuring a tiny baby bump…eeeee!! SO stoked for you guys!! Doesn’t help that I have mega baby fever right now either.

Can’t wait to hear more news!!
    Share soon!!

    • Ah, thanks so much Carly! I’ve got an “Anatomy” / Maternity series post coming up on Thursday! Stay tuned.

  33. Jay

Yay! So happy for you and Jeremy. Many congratulations and best wishes for a healthy & easy pregnancy!

  34. Jennie

So even I don’t often pipe up in the comments section, but I’m definitely a regular visitor here. I’m so happy and excited for you and Jeremy!!! I can’t wait to see where this journey takes you.

  35. Urban Wife

Woohoo! Congratulations, Kathleen & Jeremy. I’m super excited for y’all. I’ve been reading along (I’m mostly the silent type) since 2010 and am looking forward to seeing how this new adventure goes for you both. Hope you have a healthy pregnancy and seriously, I will try to be better at leaving comments. 🙂 Motherhood is wicked nuts but in the best way possible. (So says the crazy mom with a 9 week old baby who has raging colic.)

    • No worries on not piping up but I’d love to hear from you more! Congrats on the little bebe. One of my best friends had a colic-y baby – you WILL get through it. Or so I hear. XO

      • You will get through it Urban Wife! I had a raging colic baby too and now she is 20 months old and so. much. fun! Hang in there!

    • It was your fertile mojo at Girl Crush that did it to me! 😉

  36. penelope

we made magic has to be one of the best ways to announce a pregnancy ever. congratulations!

  37. Congratulations to you and Jeremy! That’s so exciting!!!

So I assume the former braid office in your home will be the baby’s room? So, stinking excited for all the details! ox

    • Actually! The former Braid office was our former master bedroom. I just bought a king size bed and we’ll be moving back in there. The baby room will be where I take my “Anatomy” outfit shots. It’s a third bedroom we’ve never really used for anything.

  38. Kristy Kotschedoff

I knew it!!! I was picking up on the hints 🙂 and I am 21 weeks pregnant myself so I think I was just “in tune” with your posts. Congrats!!!

    • I know what you mean! I always feel like I can just tell when someone is pregnant. I wondered how many of you probably just knew. 🙂

Congrats on your pregnancy too, Kristy! Exciting times!

  39. Stitchify

So so so happy for you three!!!!!!! Huge congratulations xxxxxxxxxx

  40. JDub

being a working mom will be the ultimate overlap. I know you will handle it beautifully & I can’t wait to read about it.

  41. Renee

Squeal! So happy for you both and for this little baby since he/she will have awesome parents!

    This is so awesome!

I just started reading your blog after taking the Braid ecourse and I couldn’t be more thrilled to be along for the ride! (I have a nearly-3-year-old and it has been the greatest adventure of my life!) You will love being a mama.

As a pregnant lady, get used to fielding a lot of questions. 😉 (I got a lot of: “Is your baby gonna be vegetarian? Are you using a midwife because you believe in witchcraft?”) Enjoy the journey! This is such an exciting time.

    • HAHA! Yes. The questions were REALLY overwhelming in the beginning. I’m starting to feel a bit more confident in my body as it grows this bebe – which makes me feel more confident in my opinions like “No, the baby won’t eat meat.” and “Yes. I do believe in witch craft. Would you like me to perform a spell that will make you okay with midwives?” Ha. I kid!

But really… the questions make me realize that there is a LOT I don’t know yet.

It’s good to “see” you here, Ashley. XO

  43. Stef

    How exciting! Congrats!

Before I ask this, let me make it clear that I realize it’s a totally personal question and you can ignore it. If I remember correctly, you posted awhile ago that you guys weren’t trying, but weren’t not trying? Like… leaving it up to fate a bit? We’re very much in that mindset right now, so I’ve been thinking about it quite a bit. Did you guys decide “YES, we’re doing this” or just leave things up to chance? If this isn’t you and I’m thinking of another blog (or it’s totally out of line) dear god my apologies.

    • It’s so funny how much I actually revealed on this blog! I’m MORE than happy to answer that question – I mean… I straight up talk about doing it on a Sunday afternoon in this post. Not much is TMI around here. And I’ll talk about it more in my next post too. This is going to be a long comment:

I’ve been going back and forth on whether or not to start a family for a long time. In fact, I got off birth control when Jeremy and I went to Nepal in October of 2010. Since then we’ve been using … ahem … other methods (the kinds of methods that people swear will accidentally get you pregnant in minutes). There were days when I wished I WOULD accidentally get pregnant so I wouldn’t have to make the choice. There were other days when I wished I felt more committed to being child free forever. I truly felt 50/50. But ultimately, Jeremy and I decided we wanted a family. Plus, I started wondering if we would have fertility issues. My cycle was up to 60 days long at times and the accidental pregnancy wasn’t happening. I should also note that I’ve had friends who are or have dealt with infertility and they were all telling me to start NOW. So I have to admit that did light a bit of a fire under my ass too. In some ways, I feel like my ability to conceive or not would leave our family dynamic up to fate. But the actual “trying” or “not not trying” we never left up to chance.

In early April I told Jeremy that as of my birthday (May 5th) we should start trying for real and see what happens. I just felt DONE with all the back & forth. We had determined we wanted a family. So it became an issue of when, not if. We figured it would take a while – or that it might not happen at all. So we (and by we I mean Jeremy) thought it would be fun to get a head start and pull the trigger shortly after we had that conversation. It felt like a very sexy game of Russian roulette. That was on April 21st (just half a month before my birthday). And that’s all it took. I wasn’t quite planning on being in my first trimester through the bulk of our summer vacations but meh. I’ve learned that there’s no “right” time but on that same token there is no wrong time either – if it’s something you want.

I will say – now that I’m pregnant I know this is something I do (and have) wanted. They say when you know YOU KNOW – but that never happened for me (not until I read the positive pregnancy test). It was very much a conscious and deliberate choice to bring this baby into the world.

It’s a complex thing! I hope that answers your question.

      • Stef

Thanks for the detail. It’s incredibly helpful. We had a scare (ish… but not really a scare, because we were super pumped) and the negative test was INCREDIBLY SAD which made me realize, yeah, we’re definitely ready for this. If you’re up in the air, waiting those few minutes for a pregnancy test result really is the best indicator of how you feel about things!

I’m happy to hear you had success even with the long cycle – I started tracking after that month and discovered I may have a 50+ day cycle? I didn’t even know that was possible. With the inconsistency, I feel like we almost have to TRY and not just be lazy about it happening. Whatever, clearly I’m thinking about this far too much.

Your comment is great and I appreciate it.

  44. Misty Bradley

Kathleen, I swear I thought you were already pregnant at the workshop! And I’ve been wondering ever since.

    • It turns out I WAS pregnant at the workshop! Obviously, I didn’t know it yet with that glass of wine (or two) I indulged in. I think some of us ladies have that intuition about each other. I’m glad you could feel it. 🙂

  45. Meghan

Kathleen! I’m so happy to hear this news. it’s been great to chat back and forth with you about the meaning of life and how we fit into it as creative women and how all the things that come along with it fit BACK into our creative selves…at any rate I guess you’re about to learn how to do it! This is such a happy thing and I can’t wait to read all about it.

    Best, Meghan

  46. & baby.

    Hehe, congrats!

  47. SusanA

From another regular visitor/stranger (though I have emailed you once): Congratulations, Kathleen and Jeremy! I’m so glad you’ll be sharing this new journey. How many of us know our parents only as our parents and not as individuals? It’s so great that your wee one will one day be able to look back on all these posts and get to know you, and love you I’m sure, all the better. I look forward to following along!

  48. Natasha

    O. M. G! CONGRATULATIONS you guys! I’m so very happy for you both! On reflection I think I’ve been picking up the hints but I’m not very baby focused right now so probably just ignored them. Also. Every. single. time. I see my 10 week old nephew I just think he’s the most magical thing on the planet – I mean my sister and her husband MADE A HUMAN! It’s got to be one of the most elemental, alchemical, MAGICAL things you can do. You guys, I’m so ecstatic for you 😀 😀 😀

  49. Amber

    How wonderful!

Yes, me too, I’ve been suspecting you were pregnant! Your little hints, your openness- it’s one of the things I really enjoy about this slice of the interwebs. Congratulations to you and your husband.

  50. brene

So exciting! Love and light to all three of you!

  51. ~abi~

i am so, so happy for you, kathleen. much love!!

  52. Much congratulations!! Can’t wait to hear more, and I enjoyed reading some of your super open and honest replies to some of the other comments here.

  53. Ashley

Yay! I was secretly hoping you would decide to make a baby!
Congratulations! I’m sending good vibes your way for a healthy (and easy) pregnancy, delivery, and baby.

  54. janis

ah! so sweet. really happy for you & i’m excited to follow along on this journey of yours! 🙂

  55. Hi, remember me from Girl Crush? Congratulations! I’m very happy for both of you. My baby is 27 years old now, but sometimes it seems like yesterday. I always knew I wanted to be a mother and was told it would never happen for me and then it happened at what I thought was the worst possible time. Of course it turned out to be perfect. I don’t know you well but I can tell that motherhood will make you even more of who you already are. Be well 🙂

  56. amanda

so very very very happy for you guys!! i think it’s so cool how you said that you knew. because i felt that way. i knew the night, the moment it happened for me. it’s a pretty sweet thing, knowing. can’t wait to hear more over these next 27 weeks 🙂

  57. ¡¡¡¡Felicitaciones!!!! Para ti y para Jeremy :0) I’m really happy for you guys! I can just imagine the “intensity” of your coming post and I’m really looking forward to them!

Not to long ago you wrote:

«Half of me wants to enjoy my life to the fullest with just Jeremy. I want to travel, pour myself into creating work with meaning, and craft the world around me into something beautiful. This half of me cherishes my slow, still mornings and the rituals that ease us into our day. This half of me works out twice a day and has spontaneous dinner parties. This half of me has really listened to how raising a baby is pretty much the hardest thing you’ll ever do and this half of me can’t seem to work through the “but it’s worth it” part. This half of me feels pretty damn fulfilled without baby»

And I wonder how this feelings have and will continue to morph, because I’m sure that no matter what; adventure, traveling and world-crafting will not leave your life. So I’m curious and exited to see how you guys surf this new chapter of your life’s (I mean, (s)he’s gone twice to Mexico already? Jajajaja Nice!)

So, Congratulations again J&K!!! Enjoy every minute of it!!

    • Thank you so much, Andreina!

I honestly wasn’t sure if I would be able to get pregnant or not. So in that post I didn’t want to indulge in or share the half of me that wanted to grow a family with Jeremy – the half of me that wanted to host a little soul as it grows into it’s own adventure. The half of me that wanted to hold a little naked baby close to my chest. It would have been too intimate to share that fantasy. And really, I wasn’t so positive I wanted those things until I saw a positive pregnancy test. Had I not been able to conceive I know I would have lived an equally fulfilling life (if not more so, in some ways).

Regardless, my marriage, travel, adventure, friendship, family, food, health, blogging, and my business will continue to be big priorities in my life. I know I can have it all (maybe just not all at once).

Thanks for your sweet words, Andreina. It’s always good to hear from you!

  58. Emily

How exciting! So I started reading your blog from the very beginning- I don’t remember how I even got started. I dropped off all blogs for a while, and just stumbled back across yours the other day. I was all ‘she looks so familiar! She’s got dreds now! I remember reading J&K! haha)
Anyway, i’m so thrilled that I just found you again and now such great news! You’ve come such a long way from the beginning and I can’t wait to continue following you. Congrats to you both!

    • I’m glad you found your way back for my new ‘do and exciting news. 😉

It’s funny because I have a few internet friends from back when I was a teenager writing over at Livejournal! It’s fun following along for a long time. It’s quite literally like watching someone grow up.

It’s good to hear from you! XO

  59. Veronica

CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!! This totally made my morning. (I am in South Korea. LOL) Long time reader. Just had to comment.^^

    • YAY! Thank you! Hello from the states to South Korea! I love how small the internet makes the world. XO

      • Veronica

Hello!!! Me too. The internet rocks and helps me close to fam and friends back home. And to my favorite blog! (Literally you are in my favs category on BlogLovin’) Wishing you a very healthy and enjoyable pregnancy! XO XO

  60. Angela

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Holy crap is that babe gonna be GOOD lookin’. Also it would be AMAZING if your baby came out with dreadlocks. I’d be SO freaking jealous.

    • HAHA! I don’t know … I looked like a baby gorilla and Jeremy looked like a baby elephant when we were born. So uh… the chances our baby is good looking (for a human) are slim. 😉

      • Angela

Ummm both of those sound ADORABLE to me. But maybe I’m weird. Babies do look like aliens…but at least it will grow up with great genes! (and jeans – you guys rock those too)

  61. Miranda

    Congratulations! How very exciting!

  62. Kim

Congrats to you and Jeremy! It’s wonderful news. I love your approach to life and how generous you are with sharing your stories. This post and comments seriously had me cracking up. If you lived in CA, I know we’d get along famously. I look forward to reading about this next stage in your life!

  63. Nicole

    Such good news! Congratulations!

  64. Ramona

Kathleen!! I am so excited for the too of you! How wonderful. It amazes me every time how we can create life! That is beyond what I can fathom. It is amazing! Can’t wait to hear all the updates!

    • It’s so funny – because I feel billions of people have been born. It shouldn’t really be that special – but it’s pretty incredible!

  65. Ffion

So happy for you! That’s wonderful!

  66. Margie

You sly devil, you! And Jeremy. You definitely have been back and forth on the whole baby thing since Nepal when there was a chance you were.

I’m beyond ecstatic for you guys. You both have GOOD PARENTS written all over you.

I’m 36 and my kid is about to turn 1 soon and I am just over the moon with him. He’s my favorite person. I waited until I was 35 years old. Right after my birthday, I ditched my PhD in baby block (15 years strong) and we tried. It took 3 months.

I eagerly await all of your pregnancy posts. 🙂

    • I KNOW, right?! I think it’s good that we waited a bit while I launched Braid – that endeavor felt like raising a different kind of baby!

It’s so nice to hear of other parents wildly in love with their kiddos. It’s inspiring! XOXO

      • Margie

I have pretty much given up on movies, and that’s hard because I was a huge cinephile but honestly, I don’t really miss it. I love The Kid so much that I don’t want to miss his silly cackle or anything else. Right now, he’s taken lots of steps but hasn’t really let go and I just don’t want to miss that.

You guys are going to LOVE your kid!!!

        • I think I’ll be willing to ditch the aimless browsing on my iPhone but movies… never! (I say now… who knows once I actually have this kiddo.)

  67. Congratulations Kathleen, I’m so unbelieveably happy for you!!

  68. Congratulations!! Have so definitely noticed all the baby hints.

Enjoy the crazy adventure that you (and Jeremy) have embarked on. Each day is breath-stealingly amazing.

  69. Natalie

I’m so happy for the both of you!

I smiled to myself as I saw the scan picture on my bloglovin’ feed this morning and have been wondering whether or not to comment all day(I’m a British reader!) as I have never commented on a blog I follow before, but I just felt I had to send my congratulations!

I can’t wait to read future pregnancy posts!

    • I’m flattered that this is your very first comment! Please feel free to chime in more often! Thanks so much for your sweet words. XOXO

  70. Megan

At the risk of sound like a total creeper…I got the biggest smile on my face pulling up your blog and seeing that sonogram picture! Congrats! I’ve been following you for awhile and cannot WAIT to see this new chapter unfold as you continue to be a successful business owner and become new momma. I’m sure I speak for many when I say that it will continue to be an inspiration, and a look into something that I think a lot of us small biz owners who are in or nearing that phase of life think about. Cheers!

    • I don’t think it’s creepy at all! I get so excited when my internet friends share good news – and you can’t help but smile at a baby sonogram, right!?

I’m writing a post over at Braid on how we’re already adjusting our business to accommodate the baby. Stay tuned! XOXO

  71. Alissa

Congratulations! What an amazing new adventure!!

  72. Jennie

Very excited for both of you! congratulations and wish your family the best!

  73. What a beautiful prose for a beautiful announcement. Congratulations to you both!

  74. Kim

    Congratulations 😀

  75. Kim

My baby girl is six months…she’s only been with us for six fleeting months and I can’t imagine/remember life without her.
Don’t even get me started on my eight year old boy…
Wishing you & Jeremy so much happiness as this beautiful/chaotic/unpredictable/amazing/MAGICAL adventure unfolds!

  76. SO excited! I’m so looking forward to all your thoughts on pregnancy and babies. If your period post was any indication, no holds barred. HOORAY!

  77. Jessie

    Congratulations!! Love, love, love this.

  78. Katie

Congratulations! Our little guy is 2.5 weeks, and we couldn’t be more in love with him. Best wishes to you with your pregnancy, it will go by quickly!

    • I can’t even imagine actually having the little baby yet! I guess my body and mind need a few more months to adjust and prepare. I’m trying to enjoy being pregnant – as I know it’s something I won’t experience too many times. Congrats on your little guy! I’m sending your family loads of love.

  79. Kristen

Congratulations! I’ve been reading along since before I got pregnant and am so happy for you & Jeremy! It took over a year for me to conceive and six weeks ago my wife and I became the moms of twins! I look forward to your thoughts about all this craziness and love. My question is, have you told the cats yet?!

    • Wow, Kristen! Congrats to you, your wife, and your two little ones!

We told the cats. Dinahsaur immediately tried breastfeeding and Boots tried standing on my belly. Go figure.

  80. Steph

Wow! Congratulations Kathleen this is rockin’ great news. I am truly happy for you and Jeremy.

  81. Harmony

Congratulations! To know that two super awesome adventurous people are creating another like minded being is fantastic!
Being a mama is super hard work, & before babies you can’t comprehend why people put themselves through it until you hold that little one in your arms for the first time & it all clicks-this is the best kind of magic!.
Travelling with littles is different, you take a bit more stuff & things are a bit more planned. We haven’t done any overseas trips with our little miss yet (18mths), but have been on six different road trips around areas of Australia. Best trips & memories ever as you are seeing things again for the first time through their eyes.
All the best-you’re gonna rock as a preggo & be a great mama!

  82. Jill

I’m so excited for you guys! Congratulations!! Another incredible journey ahead of you 🙂

  83. I squealed out loud when I saw this on Instagram. As in, loud enough that my husband asked what the hell was going on 🙂

Congratulations to you and to Jeremy. I can’t wait to read and see your perspective on motherhood!

SOOOO excited for you guys. I can’t wait to hear all your thoughts as you navigate your way through this incredible new journey. I’m always so inspired by your posts and your life that I imagine even though I’ve been a mom 10 months now I’ll gleam so much insight from how you handle all the new firsts.

Feeling great, thanks!! 🙂 There is almost no nausea, but I sometimes find myself gagging in middle conversations.. so I’m constantly drinking water to avoid that, which only increases my bathroom trips lol it’s just a vicious circle! And you are totally right by saying cravings are no joke… ask my hubby 😉
